Austin Film Festival’s Script Competition

About
AFF’s Script Competitions identify emerging, new writers of unparalleled talent each year. With a reputation as the premiere script competition in the world, AFF is trusted by studios, agents, and executives all across the industry to identify the storytellers of tomorrow. With all script submissions evaluated blindly and carefully by our panel of industry judges, AFF winners annually reflect a vast diversity of talent and tend to combat the industry’s trends of exclusivity. To put it simply, AFF values a great story above all else. As a bonus, AFF winners receive much more than our coveted bronze typewriter award, as our Festival team works hard to curate opportunities and experiences to catapult writers into life-changing careers. AFF competitions seek to do much more than honor winners but increase the visibility of the visionary writers and filmmakers just on the cusp of a breakthrough. See more about our industry fellowships here.
But it’s not just about winning…at Austin Film Festival we want to support every writer’s story on its journey from script to screen. All entrants can opt in to receive free reader comments from our trained readers and all competition entrants receive Festival and Conference registration discounts as well. Second Rounders, Semifinalists, and Finalists receive additional discounts on registration and get access to exclusive panels, workshops, and networking events during the Writers Conference. Submitting to AFF is so much more than simply entering a competition, It’s an investment in your career.
Our Foundation and Process
At Austin Film Festival, story comes first and foremost above all else. We fully acknowledge the hard work and passion you put into your script, and rest assured, your story is in good hands. By submitting to our script competitions, you’re joining a community of story lovers who want to help you succeed; a community that was found at Austin Film Festival’s inception in 1994, which is incredibly generous and committed to helping fellow storytellers get their foot in the door. We find that same spirit of generosity among our readers, panelists, and partners, and it is what allows us to offer opportunities to those who place in our competition.
AFF is a nonprofit and as such, volunteerism is a significant part of our ability to fulfill our mission. Our team of readers are an integral group who volunteer their time each year to help launch the careers of many aspiring writers. Our readers are recruited through referrals from individuals closely associated with AFF, MFA programs, and writers groups throughout the country. Each reader undergoes a rigorous screening and evaluation process. Once approved, readers are given strict guidelines and closely monitored throughout the duration of their participation. All readers are required to provide constructive notes for each script. Most importantly, they are also required to read each script in its entirety in order to give the full consideration that each writer deserves.
We have discovered over a 32-year period that those who get involved with us are committed to AFF’s mission of championing writers. This communal resilience has guided our organization every step of the way and is what revitalizes the work ethic of our staff and those who choose to volunteer their time.

NOT READY TO SUBMIT? TRY AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL’S SCRIPT COVERAGE & CONSULTATION PROGRAMS
Let’s face it, a great script requires many, many drafts. And sometimes to go from good script to great script, writers need a fresh set of eyes on their story. That’s why AFF’s Script Coverage and Consultation Programs offer extensive, detailed feedback on features, pilots, and short films from our team of top readers all of whom are seasoned coverage writers and industry veterans.
Another way in which Austin Film Festival supports writers throughout their entire writing journey, the Coverage Program provides no less than four – six pages of notes which evaluate your script’s characters, plot, dialogue, pace, structure as well as the overall story and marketability. AFF’s coverage notes will help your script make great strides towards final draft as you craft a writing sample that takes your writing from hobby to industry ready.
Austin Film Festival’s Script Consultation program connects emerging voices with established writers, managers, and agents within our community. This opportunity leverages AFF’s comprehensive evaluation guidelines and longstanding industry partnerships to ensure a detailed analysis of your latest project. The AFF Script Consultation Program will provide writers the opportunity to submit a feature or TV pilot script and receive thoughtful and comprehensive verbal notes from an industry professional via Zoom in a one-hour one-on-one consultation.

“I really don’t even know what to say about my experience at the 2025 Austin Film Festival other than it was quite literally a dream come true. While winning the ‘Comedy Teleplay Spec Award’ is certainly a part of that dream being realized, it is far from the only contributor. What truly makes the AFF so special has, and always will be, its community. Wherever you begin your creative journey, there is no destination an artist will find an easier time calling home than the Austin Film Festival. Your creative heroes will become your peers, your peers will become your heroes, and all any of them are looking to do is welcome you with open arms. I have spent my entire life looking for a place like the Austin Film Festival, and I consider it a great privilege to be in a position to shine the light for all my fellow artists still out there to follow.”
