Qualifications
Each department has different qualifications. Please carefully review below all the departments available before selecting the one you feel best suits you. All Internships are unpaid, but provide the opportunity to learn and develop applicable workplace skills!
Student Interns: All internship applicants seeking course credit are required to provide proof of their internship requirements for school.
Volunteer Interns: Applicants do not have to be in school to participate; we have a variety of volunteer opportunities for those seeking experience!
- An internship is any official or formal program that provides practical experience in an occupation or profession. It is done in exchange for school credit (usually as a graduation requirement) from an accredited college or university.
- We also have opportunities for the same positions to those who want to volunteer their time for the festival in exchange for credentials and to gain creditable experience in an occupation or profession in the film or event planning industry. If you are a student, recent graduate, or someone looking to change career paths you can participate in a volunteer capacity.
Internships consist of a regular weekly work schedule within a particular AFF department and are designed to expand participants professional knowledge and experience.
All internships are unpaid. Additionally, all internships are in-person positions. There are no remote internship opportunities available. All COVID guidelines are being respected and followed.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Development Department
Department Description: The Development Department’s primary role is to cultivate and maintain relationships with local and national sponsors to raise money for the festival. The primary goal of the position is to raise money in cash sponsorships for the Austin Film Festival, On Story, and the Film & Food Party. The purpose of the Development Department is to cultivate new corporate sponsorships, both locally and nationally. The duties include searching out and cold calling new sponsors, setting up meetings, creating presentation material, closing sponsors, preparing sponsor agreements, maintaining relations with the sponsors during the festival and providing each sponsor with a follow-up report which encapsulates the Festival’s fulfillment of the sponsorship agreement.
Job Description: AFF is seeking interns to work in the Development Department on a variety of daily tasks and projects that will assist in fundraising for the festival, helping build partnerships with corporate clients, aiding in the execution of networking events, and maintaining sponsor and partner relations.
Job Responsibilities:
- Contacting potential sponsors and partners through emails and phone calls
- Negotiating festival promotion for food trade with local restaurants
- Researching potential sponsor targets
- Assist with writing marketing proposals for local businesses

Job Description: AFF is seeking interns to work in the Development Department under the Development Events Coordinator to assist on planning, building, and working on the logistics for the hospitality events during the festival. A typical day will include researching and contacting the top businesses and restaurants in town for partnerships in our Film & Food Fundraising Party, researching venues for parties, creating copy for marketing materials for Film & Food and festival parties, and updating partnership database. Festival requirements include attending festival parties to assist in line and volunteer management, set-up and tear-down, and act as an AFF Contact person for guests with questions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Helping acquire sponsor assets, marketing materials, and collateral and understand how the sponsor wants to use these items to market their company during the festival
- Collaborate with the Development Team on generating new avenues for sponsorship and new outreach for sponsors
- Vetting venues, restaurants, or vendors for one of our late-night festival parties
- Help Development Events Coordinator with auction outreach
- Assist in finalizing details for fall fundraising event

Conference Department
Department Description: Held during the first four days of the Festival, the annual Writers Conference celebrates the writer’s contribution to film, television, and new media. It features panels and events that cover the art, craft, and business of storytelling as told by leading Hollywood showrunners, writers, directors, producers, managers, agents, and industry executives. Past panelists include David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Greta Gerwig, Bill Hader, Lulu Wang, and Keenen Ivory Wayans.
Job Description: You will work directly with the Creative Director to coordinate panels, conduct research on potential speakers, topics, and industry trends; write copy for programmed panels, and assist with marketing efforts. This is an opportunity to gain experience in both the film and event planning industries.
During the Conference, Creative interns will have the unique opportunity to act as Room Mangers for Conference events, allowing them to interact with and host our renowned panelists and moderators, manage a space, and gain access to more Conference content than any of our other volunteer or internship positions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist Conference Department with Conference preparation including research on potential candidates, marketing initiatives, compiling materials, and pitching and writing content for AFF’s website
- Manage panel rooms during the Conference, greeting panelists and moderators while leading a team of volunteers
- Ideal candidates will have equal interest in event production and the film industry
- Assist with adapting some or all of the conference events for the virtual space
Project Ownership Opportunities:

Festival Research Initiative: As more and more events are returning to an in-person format, this could be a great opportunity to learn from them. Not only can we see how they’re handling returning to in person, but in other aspects too? What are some new things festivals are doing and how is their audience responding to it? Learning from other festivals can help us adapt, change, and put on an even better event.
Panelist of the Day: The Panelist of the Day marketing strategy is one of the main initiatives leading up to the Conference. It gets our audience familiar with our panelists, drives last minute badge sales, and provides consistent social media content.
Script Analysis: In preparation for the Conference and our live readings of unproduced scripts, scripts in consideration will need to be read and analyzed while those chosen for readings must be prepared for actors.
Tricks of the Trade: Tricks of the Trade is one of our most popular and visited pages Using this as a tool to promote the Conference along with past and upcoming panelists would be a smart move. It’s something our audience is familiar with, could be promoted in newsletters and provide solid social media content.
Interns will get the opportunity to:

Timeframe: We are looking for 8-15 interns between the months of January and November who can work a schedule for Spring/Summer, Summer/Fall, or the duration of the year for an average of 12-15 hrs/week.
Office Management Department
Department Description: This department welcomes all guests into the office and serves as a liaison between all departments. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: management of all orders coming through AFF, registration, hotel reservations, organization of the office, supply maintenance, collateral print projects and mail outs, incoming mail, membership, recruitment/training of interns/staff/contract employees, open & close the office, etc.
Job Description: An Office Management intern will assist the Office Manager in maintaining an efficient office environment. They will aid in facilitating the operations of the membership program, fulfilling merchandise orders, running errands for the office (car required), as well as administrative duties such as data entry and general day-to-day phone calls (customer service a plus!).
Job Responsibilities:
- Project coordination: maintaining deadlines, getting price quotes, creating priorities, assisting in the implementation of year-long projects (membership, registration, food trade).
- Researching and creating systems and structures that help support the organization.
Project Ownership Opportunities:
Approximately a month into each internship, interns will be assigned one of the following projects to own throughout the rest of the internship’s duration. Project assignment is based upon interns’ capabilities and goals.
Food Trade and Donations: The Festival utilizes relationships with Austin businesses to its benefit especially when it comes to food trade. This project will give interns the opportunity to collaborate with the Development team to help create relationships with local businesses for the potential of food trade during the Festival and throughout the year. With these relationships would also come the fulfilment of providing food and lunches for staff and sticking to a budget that is provided for them while learning customer service and sales experience.
Membership: This project will allow an intern to help manage our membership base. This would include communicating with members regarding upcoming events, membership renewal (via mail, phone calls or email?), fulfilling membership orders/renewals, conducting research into other membership opportunities at other organizations, upkeep of database for current interns.
Merch/Collateral: The Festival heavily relies upon printed materials and merchandise. This project will give interns the opportunity to manage and create timelines, conduct research, practice organization and gain customer service by fulfilling orders.

Script Competition Department
Department Description: Austin Film Festival’s Script Competitions are one of the most highly respected writing contests of its kind. Past entrants have found success with signing with agents and managers, getting their scripts optioned and produced, and being staffed in TV writers’ rooms. The competition received 13,175 entries in 2020. Due to the high volume of submissions, the Script Competition Department operates year-round and needs a team of highly skilled and trustworthy interns to maintain AFF’s high standard of quality. On average, 8-10 interns will be recruited each session (Spring, Summer, and Fall). Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
Job Description: Script Competition Department interns are primarily responsible for helping facilitate and execute Competition marketing initiatives, onboarding and assigning readers scripts, and frequently answering entrant questions via email and phone. Interns will get the opportunity to develop skills within the following areas: people and time management, customer support, and data compilation.
Job Responsibilities:
Spring Applicants (January – May)
- Promoting and marketing the Screenplay Competition to various film schools, writers’ groups, organizations, blogs, message boards, and through social media
- Processing screenplay submissions and entering entrant information into databases
- Assisting with tracking competition readers’ progress and reviewing their notes
Summer Applicants (May – August)
- Data entry, analysis, and database management
- Assists department heads with managing team of readers including facilitating communications, tracking progress, recruiting, reviewing notes, etc.
- Assists with department marketing initiatives including generating social media posts, marketing outreach, and initiative implementation
- Editing and proofing reader notes
- Assisting with preparing notification letters to all screenplay entrants
- Basic office assistance such as answering phones and filing
- Assist with year-round events
Fall Applicants (August – December)
- In order to be considered, Fall interns MUST be available all day on Saturday, October 23 plus one entire additional day of the Conference (Wednesday October 20 – Sunday October 24) to assist in the production of the Austin Film Festival
- Responsible for managing rooms/department registration tables at the Festival & Conference – must display courtesy and professionalism to all attendees, panelists, and press
- Researching production companies to help promote Semifinalists, Finalists, and Winners of the competition
- Helping with coordinating and assembling the annual Producers Book which contains a listing of all Semifinalists, Finalists, and Winners from the competition
- Reviewing and copy-editing competition readers’ notes
- Preparing for Festival and Conference in October—planning and coordinating special panels and events for top writers in the competition
- Assisting with the annual Pitch Competition during the Conference
Project Ownership Opportunities:

Reader Liaison:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the daily assignment of scripts
- Troubleshooting- assisting readers with any problems they might have (using the system, corrupted scripts, wrong notes etc).
- Onboarding new readers
- Responsible for keeping track of potential readers – reaching out to them accordingly
- Regularly check to confirm application, reader test, agreement forms have been received.
- Assisting with script tracking – flagging scripts that are overdue and notifying the reader
Marketing Research:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the continuous efforts to market the competition, which includes researching and contacting relevant groups, organizations, schools, etc.
- Keep detailed accounts of what outreach efforts have been done and when
- Establish initial communication and build relationships with the people/groups contacted
Reader Outreach:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the continued efforts to grow our reader pool
- Researching for new groups where we could potentially recruit new readers
- Following up with interested parties – providing them the necessary documents/tools to become onboarded readers
- Following up through the onboarding process making sure all potential readers become onboarded readers
- Keep detailed notes on this process (reason why they cannot join, any referrals they might have etc.)
Festival Prep:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Help coordinate notification letter distribution process – envelope stuffing, folding, postage stamps
- Assist with pe-Festival activities and Writer’s Conference coordination.
- Assist with the creation of Competition Semifinalist and Finalist Itinerary Packets
Interns will get the opportunity to:

Qualifications:
- Entrants for the current year’s Script Competitions are not eligible to be considered

Film Competition Department
Department Description: The Film Department at Austin Film Festival runs the film competition and programs all the films that screen during the Festival. This involves processing and reviewing entries, marketing, creating the film program, and coordinating with filmmakers. The competition received 6,300 submissions in 2019. Additionally, the Film Department organizes and assists with year-round events including the annual Audience Award Series and advance screenings. The Film Department recruits 6-10 interns each session. We are looking for self-starters and problem-solvers who are interested in film and event planning and want to work with a nationally renowned film festival at the ground level.
Job Description: Film Department runs the film competition and programs all films that screen during the festival and year round events. Interns will facilitate the processing of over 6,000 submissions, reviewing entries, marketing, build the slate, and coordinate with other AFF departments. Another facet of the internship is researching programming, marketing plans and general film industry trends. The department recruits 6-10 interns per session.
Job Responsibilities:
Spring Internship:
- Processing submissions and managing the submission database
- Assisting department with competition marketing initiatives and outreach
- Assisting department with monitoring the Film Selection Committee
- Assisting with filmmaker and film research
- Assisting with general event marketing copy and graphics creation

Summer & Fall Internship:
- Assisting department with monitoring the Film Selection Committee
- Assisting with filmmaker and film research
- Reviewing & copyediting printed and digital program materials
- Assisting with marketing for Festival screenings
- Assisting Theater Operations Manager, Production Manager, and Film Marketing Coordinator when needed
- Festival: shadowing, theater shifts, registration shift, office shifts, roundtable management

Project Ownership Opportunities:
Selection Committee: This is a role that handles the intern side of the screener team such as research, outreach, metrics tracking, note taking, evaluating test, monitoring current screeners and assigning films. Assisting with recruiting will also be a major task for this position. This includes researching outreach, helping onboard new members of the team and communicating with potential team members.
Film Marketing: This positions cover outreach research, writing copy, graphics, analytic breakdowns, marketing research, and marketing evaluations. This position helps draft marketing plans for different films or shorts blocks, evaluate how to market for different venues, help set up marketing for different venues and assist with film program rollout.
Film Competition Processing: While every intern will assist with general processing, this position deal with more of the data management and evaluation as the competition progresses throughout the year. This includes creating tracking sheets and comparing data sets to help identify trends and allow the film team to evaluate current marketing plans.
Film Programming: This position is an intern that assists with programming films, building slates, and researching other festivals slates. This intern would shadow the programmer and take notes during programming discussions.
Interns will get the opportunity to:
Process film entries, watch film entries, shadow the film programming team, work and attend the festival, get an inside look at the workings of a film festival and develop data management and office skills.

On Story Department - Editing
Department Description: An extension of AFF’s programs, mission, and messaging, On Story offers inspiring and instructional curations from the entertainment industry’s leading writers, directors, and creatives. It serves to shine a light on these visionaries who, through the transformative power of storytelling, boldly reflect the best of humanity and, subsequently, inspire and instruct the next generation of storytellers.
The On Story Project houses six major components: a television series, podcast, radio show, book series, archive, and an all-encompassing website. The rich material captured at the Festival and year-round events is then curated into productions offered for free online and through public radio and television; preserved and archived at The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University; and edited into a multi-book series in partnership with The University of Texas Press.
A mirror to the Festival’s organic, unfettered, story-driven experience, On Story provides high quality, inspirational and educational free content for any and all. It embodies the heart and soul of the on-the-ground programming, sharing AFF’s values and personality with the world at large.
Job Description: The On Story Editing Intern will assist in the post-production duties affiliated with the execution of the On Story Project – a PBS television show, PRX radio show, podcast, and archive housed at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University. On Story Editing Interns will also assist the On Story Producers with daily tasks pertaining to day-to-day operations, data management, marketing, as well as other short non-On Story editing assignments. Internship tasks provide opportunities to gain experience in post-production, production workflow, media management, and distribution.
Additional opportunities exist in the Fall for those interested in physical production and event coordination. A majority of our content is captured at the Austin Film Festival and Writers Conference in October.
Job Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the On Story Editing Intern include, but are not limited to:
- Finding and managing movie clips for the radio, podcast and television shows based on Fair Use Guidelines
- Creating marketing assets including short form videos, graphics, photos and audio samples
- Quality checking cuts of the television, radio and podcast shows
- Media management of video and audio files
- Synching footage
- Exporting different codecs/quicktimes of sequences
- Delivering files for color correction and sound mixing
- Maintaining calendars and strict deadlines involving the show
- Researching upcoming movies and television shows to help shape current content
- Updating the On Story IMDb and managing relevant information on the OS website
- Assisting the On Story producers with daily tasks & last minute changes
- Assisting with developing other AFF media projects

Internship tasks provide opportunities to gain experience in the operations of producing a TV show, FM-broadcast radio show and podcast. A majority of our content is captured at the Austin Film Festival and Writers Conference in October.

Department Description: The Executive Department consists primarily of the Executive Director, Barbara Morgan, the Executive Assistant, and the Bookkeeper. Summer Film Camp Interns will assist with all aspects of production of camper’s films and will supervise the student film crews in the capacity of on-set producer.

- Ensure all equipment for respective camps is organized and ready for each day
- Download all SD Card data onto the computer at the end of each day
- Wipe media from devices after it has been downloaded
- First point of contact for any equipment issues
- Responsible for plugging in all batteries at the end of each day to use in the next class
Final Film Uploads
- Ensure all of the final films are uploaded into drop box and in the respective folders on the hard drive
- Start the initial Premiere Pro file for the SFC Showcase to include film, week, and camper names on each title card.

Job Description: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to assisting the Marketing Department with research, copy writing, grassroots efforts and internet marketing strategies. This includes working with social media, flyer design, event promotion, etc. Researching, compiling, and updating media lists, tracking media hits and archiving. This person will work directly with our marketing team; the intern will learn the basics of promotions law and assist the marketing coordinator from time to time as well.

Working under the guidance of the Marketing Director, Marketing Coordinator, and Head Photographer, the Photography Intern will have the following duties:
- Taking photos and documenting all important and exciting moments at assigned locations during the Festival.

Department Description: The Film Department at Austin Film Festival runs the film competition and programs all the films that screen during the Festival. Job Description: This internship will focus on creating and implementing marketing strategies for AFF’s Film Competition, as well as year round events and general brand awareness. Interns will primarily develop marketing plans, reach out to relevant organizations, universities, and publications, post call for entry information to websites and social media platforms, and keep track of each strategy’s effectiveness. The position expects the ability to design content for grassroots marketing purposes. Interns will be required to work a regular schedule within business hours (Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm), though we are flexible on the specific hours. A prospective intern should be comfortable with computers, especially Word, Excel, and Adobe Creative Suite, efficient, punctual, outgoing, and good with people.

Volunteer Department (Applications open Summer 2023)
Department Description: The Volunteer Department is tasked with recruiting, orienting, scheduling, and managing all volunteers who assist with Festival execution. Volunteers are absolutely vital to the basic functioning of the Festival so successful recruitment and management of volunteers is this department’s main goal.
Job Description: Assist the Volunteer Manager and Coordinator with managing, organizing and preparing materials for the Festival. Responsibilities include: drafting emails, creating documents, helping with inventory, administrative needs, as well as attending volunteer orientations.
During the Festival: Interns will assist supervisors by making sure venue needs are met. They will also act as an extension of the Volunteer Management Team.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist with pre-Festival research and preparation, which includes: finding new outlets for recruitment, updating online postings, and designing collateral and flyers
- Communicate regularly with volunteers to facilitate scheduling and in-the-moment problem solving
- Help manage volunteer scheduling
- Collaborate with all AFF departments to ensure their volunteer needs are being met

Registration Department (Applications open Summer 2023)
Department Description: The Registration department maintains and manages all registration information, including the AFF FileMaker Pro database and all orders and check-in materials. Registration provides regular reports and data analysis for marketing purposes. Performs a series of quality control audits leading up to and execution of on-site Registration during the Festival.
Job Description: Registration Interns will assist the Registration Director before and during the festival. They assist with registration database management, organizing registration materials (badge and film pass purchases/changes/transfers), and communicating with and fielding questions from festival attendees. They will also play a very important role in updating records before, during, or after the festival. We must track each step of a transaction so attention to detail is pivotal.
During the Festival: Interns will assist the Registration Director with managing registration and communicating with attendees to troubleshoot in real time as well as updating the Registration Director of any changes/daily issues that may occur. It is the Registration Team’s job to ensure the experience of the Austin Film Festival & Conference is of the highest quality and goes off without a hitch.

Qualifications: Interns must be proficient in Microsoft Suite, especially Excel program experience. FileMaker and Photoshop are preferred or at least some experience with any type of relational database.

Film Competition Department - Production Management (Applications open Summer 2023)
2023 AFF Production Interns
**THIS IS NOT A FILM PRODUCTION INTERN POSITION**
Reports to: Production Manager
Dates: August – November 2023
Hours: Hours will vary between 12-15 hours/week during the weeks leading up to and following the Festival. During the Festival (October 26th – November 2nd, 2023), days during the festival will begin with the Austin Film Festival staff meeting @ 7am (10am leading up to festival) and conclude an hour after the last screening ends.
Position Description: The Production Intern will support the Production Manager and sometimes the Theater Operations Coordinator in managing and coordinating all film venue logistics and presentation in order to create a positive festival experience for the filmmakers and audiences during the 28th annual Austin Film Festival. The position requires knowledge of film as a digital media and its different formats, as well as a general understanding of exhibition standards.
The Production Intern will assist the Production Manager prior to the Festival in organizing all incoming media files, updating film tracking spreadsheets and assisting with Quality Checks of selected films. Attention to detail, high organizational skills and ability to operate calmly under high-pressure situations is a MUST. During the Festival, the Production Intern will travel with the Production Manager to various venues to assist with troubleshooting, theater management and anything else needed to make each screening a success.
Key Duties:
- Quality check incoming films
- Completing film traffic tracking and paperwork
- Checking festival playlists
- Traveling with Production Manager during the Festival
- Attending Projectionist, Theater Manager and Filmmaker Liaison training
- Conducting tech checks with filmmakers during the Festival

- Knowledge of Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, After Effects and VLC preferred

PRODUCTION INTERN POSITIONS
Assistant Production Manager (2-3): Assists Production Manager with Filmmaker Registration by managing binder and other tracking documents. Intern will be responsible for tracking incoming data from Filmmaker Packets, Badge Registration forms and additional ticket/badge purchases. Intern will also work at the Registration Table during the first few days of the Festival.
Production Operations (2-3): Assists with handling incoming filmmaker material including exhibition files (on hard drives), screeners, trailers & stills and other material. Interns will test all incoming screeners and maintain organization of all materials received. All hard drives will need to be virus scanned, uploaded to computers, spot-checked and prepared for Quality Control. Interns will also assist with computer setup, software installs and projection logistics. Interns will also create playlists for the Festival and attend tech checks/venue walk-throughs to have a full understanding of tech operations during the Festival.
Film Competition Department - Theater Operations (Applications open Spring 2023)

Job Description: The Theater Operations Intern will support the Theater Operations Manager in managing and coordinating all film venue logistics, organizing venue materials, and preparing Front of House requirements in order to make the 30th Annual Austin Film Festival a positive experience for filmmakers and audiences alike. In addition to pre-festival preparation, this intern will travel with the Manager throughout the duration of the festival and assist with theater management and any day-of troubleshooting required to make the festival a success.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist with venue walkthrough and tech checks
- Coordinate logistics of theater venues for the live festival
- Prep front of house for all screenings
- Assist with recruitment and training of theater managers and volunteers
Interns will get the opportunity to:
Assist with the build out of venues for the live festival, work with festival tech and sound checks, and coordinate logistics for the live festival.

Festival Logistics (Applications open Summer 2023)
POSITION: FESTIVAL LOGISTICS INTERN

OVERALL JOB DESCRIPTION: The Festival Logistics Intern will be part of the Venue and Logistics team, helping organize and run the staging elements of the 30th Austin Film Festival. The Venue and Logistics team works with every department inside of the Austin Film Festival in order to support and help execute the inspiring programming that makes up hundreds of events and showings the Festival offers.
The Festival Logistics Intern will actively help set up panels, talkbacks and other events throughout the Festival and maintain clear lines of communication between AFF team members and guests. Alongside the Venue and Logistics Coordinator, the Festival Logistics Intern will also assist in the management of a volunteer team.
This internship provides a chance to gain skills that would be valuable in a number of career paths such as:
- Meeting, convention and event planning
