Congratulations to Cord Jefferson on winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay!
By AFF Conference Director Emily Lock

Last night Cord Jefferson, the recipient of AFF’s inaugural Writer’s Writer Award, took home the Oscar® for his debut feature, the biting, witty, cerebral satire American Fiction.
Adapted from Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, the strikingly sharp film won the Audience Award at the 30th annual Austin Film Festival, and is now officially an Academy Award® winner.
At last year’s Awards Luncheon, Cord gave an inspiring acceptance speech calling AFF his “favorite Festival so far” and detailing what forging a career as a writer means to him. Check it below…
In addition, Cord sat down with AFF’s On Story during the annual Writer’s Conference and discussed bringing his own perspective and sense of humor to the source material, and successfully marrying comedy and drama in one film. In case you missed it, you can get a glimpse into this Oscar-winning writer’s creative process on the latest On Story podcast episode.
From all of us at AFF, congratulations to Cord on this well-deserved win!
