“I think that improv-ing and writing are the exact same skill except when you’re writing you’re improv-ing all the characters. You know, that’s for dialogue, structure is a whole other thing, but, they cross inform, so then once I started writing and seeing structure, I then became aware when I’m improv-ing, ‘oh my improv should be to forward this plot, it’s not just to see who can get the biggest laugh.’
“If I’m going to go off script it should be for a reason and it’s great if its funny, but most importantly is it servicing the plot. When I’m writing a lot of times I’m just- improv-ing. And I am not a very disciplined writer, I have been at times, I used to make sure I sat and wrote for three hours a day or something, but now I spend a huge amount of time imagining, like months imagining the script and imagining what the scenes are and really understanding what the tone I’m going to write is, and then I write very quickly, and then I write the thing that I’ve been imagining for so long.”
