Incoming
My name is David Singer, and my series Incoming won the Digital Series award in 2019. The show is now in production as a narrative podcast starring Tracy Letts, David Pasquesi, Amy Landecker, Paul Adelstein, Jenni Hadley and Rusty Schwimmer.
In my experience, festivals emphasize the commerce part of being a filmmaker: GETTING AN AGENT SO YOUR DAD WILL RESPECT YOU, or HOW TO NAVIGATE DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT GETTING KIDNAPPED, or HOW TO PITCH TO SOMEONE WHO HATES YOU. Which, sure, are all relevant. Austin Film Festival is the only one that feels like it’s made by and for people who care about the craft of storytelling. There are panels by people who care about the art form, there are other writers telling fascinating stories – but more than that, there’s a legitimate feeling of camaraderie that you only experience when you meet fellow travelers. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the only one that matters.
At the 2019 festival, I met another writer competing in my category named Chris Pahlow and we clicked right away. We stayed in touch after the pandemmy hit, and we decided to try and write something together – me in Chicago, and he in Melbourne, Australia. Three years later, we’re still a team. We meet and write on Zoom a few times a week and started a collaborative called NOBODY MOVE. And we debuted our pilot Time Management at a live staged reading at last year’s AFF.
