Back by popular demand, join us at 4th Tap Brewing Co-op for a casual and informative Roundtable workshop covering all-things film making! In the spirit of AFF’s popular Roundtable sessions during our Writers Conference, this event will offer exclusive and intimate access to local filmmakers, producers, distributors, and industry insiders with knowledge and experience to share. Visit different tables during the event and get some one-on-one access with our esteemed guests. Attendees are encouraged to ask specific questions about the creative and business aspects of film making. “Meet the Crew” at this roundtable session – learn how to navigate every department on a set and hear from people working in the industry as to standards and expectations.

Meet the Crew!
Miguel Alvarez - Director
Austin-based filmmaker Miguel Alvarez has received awards from the Directors’ Guild of America, Panavision’s Emerging Filmmaker program, the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, and the Austin Film Society for his films,Tadpoles, Veterans, KID and Mnemosyne Rising, and Atlantic City. He was a Screenwriting fellow for the Latino Screenwriting Project sponsored by Cinefestival and Sundance and one of the inaugural participants in the Kickstarter-Kodak Initiative. He also currently serves as Executive Producer of Austin Film Festival’s television show, On Story.
Matt Patterson - Assistant Directing
Matt has written, directed and produced several award winning shorts and features. His dramedy feature AN ORDINARY FAMILY (co-writer/producer) premiered in competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival, won the New Orleans Film Festival’s Grand Jury Award and went on to play at over 35 festivals around the world. His second feature BINDLESTIFFS (producer) sold to indie film giant Kevin Smith and Phase 4 after winning the Slamdance Audience Award. His sci-tech thriller DRAGON DAY (co-writer/cinematographer/producer) sold to Entertainment One domestically and was distributed to over 20 territories worldwide.
John Merriman - Acting
John Merriman starred in the New York Times Critics’ Pick YOU HURT MY FEELINGS, the LA Film Fest winning feature GRETCHEN, and the indie comedies PICTURES OF SUPERHEROES, CINEMA SIX and MUSTANG ISLAND now available on Netflix. He acted in the acclaimed Sundance film PIT STOP and the SXSW award winner LOVES HER GUN. Together with Kerri Lendo, he wrote, directed, and acted in the short films MODERN MAN and SLEEP STUDY which won the Audience Award at the 2010 Austin Film Festival.
He’s also one of the hosts and producers of “Inside Joke”, the Moontower Comedy Festival’s video interview series and has interviewed dozens of comedy luminaries since the festival’s beginning. He has written for the Moontower news site since 2013.
John was born in Houston, Texas. He attended Connecticut College where he majored in Psychology. He has called Austin his home since 1996.
Vicky Boone - Casting
Vicky Boone’s recent casting credits include the English-language remake of the hit Norwegian series SKAM, created by Julie Andem, Where’d You Go, Bernadette? and Everybody Wants Some!! both directed Richard Linklater, Mr. Roosevelt directed by Noel Wells, the documentary Tower, by Keith Maitland and The Suplex Duplex Complex, a short film by Todd Rohal, for Adult Swim. Other favorite projects include Kat Candler’s Hellion, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, The Suburbs directed by Spike Jonze in collaboration with Arcade Fire, and Steve Collin’s Gretchen, with producers Jay Van Hoy, Lars Knudsen and Anish Savjani. She lives in Austin, Texas.
Renée Stairs - Production Sound
Renée Stairs is a freelance production sound recordist from Austin, TX. Originally from New Jersey, she attended the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences in Radio-TV-Film. She has been a sound mixer for 7 years with a variety of projects under her belt including television, narrative, documentary, sports, news, ENG, corporate and everything in between.
James Jackson Leach - Producer
James is a serial entrepreneur responsible for several start-ups in the tech, fashion, film industry, and restaurant sector. He recently Executive Produced Dirty Weekend, written and directed by Neil LaBute, starring Matthew Broderick and Alice Eve. He co-founded Lucky’s Puccias & Pizzeria, an Austin favorite for authentic Italian pizza. He also co-founded Mort Subite, Austin’s first Belgian beer bar. He considers film to be as much a business as any other venture and applies the same tactics to creative projects as he does to his retail establishments.
Ivy Chiu - Director of Photography
Ivy Chiu is DP with global roots. Growing up in Taiwan and Texas, Ivy saw storytelling as a way to connect with people from all backgrounds. Ivy’s love to see the world has taken her to shoot projects in Germany, Haiti, India, Iceland, and all over the US. Her aesthetic emotes a quiet nostalgia that invites you to join her journey. Since graduating from the University of Texas film program, Ivy has crewed on a wide range of films, including Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some, as well as commercials for Ford, Capitol One, and Live Nation. Ivy DPed the narrative feature Hidden Summer in 2017 and is stoked for the new films she’ll lens this year.
