Staff Pick: The Bystanders
By: Alyne Harding
“The Bystanders” is a delightfully British take on the Watcher/Celestial Bureaucracy trope, ala “The Adjustment Bureau,” “Fringe” or even “The Matrix” series, but much more laid back and fun. Pete is a loner who is recruited by this invisible collective, the Bystanders, to… well, they never really explain the what or why of it all, but themes such as Finding Your Family, Second Chances, Believing in the Impossible, etc. are very strong here. Pete has never really had a friend, never understood how to make or maintain friendships, and he never achieved his lifelong goal of becoming a Champion, but in his new role as a Bystander for a pair of seemingly worthless mundanes, he gets to re-evaluate his goals and redefine what’s important to his life.
