Austin Film Festival brings inspiring women to the forefront with female-dominated films this year. Between female directors and writers to kick-ass, awesome women portrayed on screen, these stories are sure to ignite the most spectacular feminist fire at the Festival! Get a glimpse at a couple of those films below.
Female-directed documentary MANKILLER is amongst these films. The story of Wilma Mankiller, a pioneer in women’s equality in her native Cherokee nation is peak inspiration. Not even immense adversity could stop Wilma Mankiller from the groundbreaking she was destined to do. This documentary chronicles Mankiller’s relentless fight for what’s right from her very beginnings in rural Oklahoma to her two terms as Chief of the Cherokee nation. In a world where women in leadership roles, unfortunately, is not as prevalent as it should be, MANKILLER is an important lesson for anyone that feels like their goals might be too high or unattainable. You can do it. You are capable.
You can catch MANKILLER as well as a panel conversation with the documentary’s executive producer Gale Anne Hurd at AFF 2017! Hurd, who has also executive produced “The Walking Dead”, Armageddon, and Aliens, will be just one of the industry’s leading women in attendance!
At the Fest, you should also look out for Quality Problems. Craziness ensues when Bailey’s breast cancer relapses in the midst of planning her daughter’s eighth birthday party and taking care of her Alzheimer’s-stricken father. Based on the real life events of filmmakers and leading actors Brooke and Doug Purdy, Quality Problems is a story about a fearless woman and her family coming together to conquer real life obstacles. The big, vicious “C” won’t stop her from being a good friend, daughter, wife and mother – the show must go on!
Shining a light on female filmmakers is important to Austin Film Festival and will be so prevalent throughout our fun-filled week. Check out the list below for films that also celebrate female focused stories and female directors & catch them all at AFF 2017!
